Horse drawn carriage

As the kitschy Frank Sinatra song suggests, love and marriage go together like a horse and carriage. So, why not mark your nuptials with an equestrian-powered buggy ride.

Many people long for the charm, novelty, and distinction of a horse drawn carriage, whether at a wedding, sweet 16 party or an elegant business affair. The ornate cabs are often hand-carved from fine woods while the horses are well-bred show horses and sometimes special imports.

Arranging such regal services can often be daunting. Remember these basic tips.

Rates are most competitive for daytime services and access is hard to acquire. If you want a horse and buggy during daylight hours, make your reservation at least three days in advance– if not weeks. Night time reservations can be made extemporaneously.

Carriages generally have seating for four to six people, not including the driver who will be perched in a traditional tuxedo and tails on a separate high bench. Please note: Most companies will charge you extra for more than four people in your party. That charge could range from $5 to $25 per person.

When booking, you’ll need to select horse breed, horse color and a carriage color. Among the most popular breeds are Belgians, Shires, and Percherons. Different companies will have their own selection of eclectic open or covered coaches, sometimes detailed in plush velvet, silk or leather. Some companies have Cinderella-style carriages, but limousine and vis-a-vis styles are most popular.

If you want special decorations to adorn the coach — such as flowers, signs, or ribbons — it will cost you and need prior arrangement. Of course, most companies let you decorate your own carriages for free.

Horse drawn carriages are rented in 15-minute intervals, generally for 30 minutes to two hours. Depending on the agency, rates could average from $20 to $50, per person, per couple, or per cab for every 15 minutes.

If you’d like mementos, many companies sell souvenirs and even disposable cameras for your photographing needs. Professional photographers are also available.

Those are the basics. The question remains: where do you find a company near your home town?

Most urban centers have several agencies competing in the carriage market. A good place to find a Horse and Carriage in the UK is: http://www.horse-drawn-carriage.com

  12. Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.
